I just did a mini-rewatch of Theory of Love with the express purpose of trying to see what I could see about why I am so drawn to Khai's character, besides the fact that in general I tend to like people who Off Jumpol plays, and no hard-and-fast conclusions drawn, but this time I really came away thinking about Khai's journey as a bisexual individual.

First off, my own relationship to my sexuality looks nothing like Khai's so it's not that I relate to him. But there is something in me that likes seeing a character start out as not only straight but also seemingly repulsed by the fact of their own possible non-straightness. Khai says as much at the party, when Third says that Khai did the shitty things because he was repulsed by Third. Khai says, yeah, I was repulsed. He also has a pretty visceral repulsion at the first inkling of doing coupley things with Third--the ice cream fantasy is what I'm thinking of here--where he starts out like, ugh it's so gross, I don't want to do this with a guy/Third.

But in both instances, he quickly corrects himself. With Third, he says, I was repulsed but I was wrong about my feelings. And with the ice cream, he almost immediately thinks, but I do want to eat ice cream with Third. (Let's acknowledge that the ice cream is a metaphor, eh?)

I know a lot of people don't like seeing the push and pull inside someone over whether or not they a) have feelings for someone of their same gender, b) want to act on it and c) then what that all means for for their sexuality. But I've come to the conclusion that I enjoy it very much. I like to see the waffling and the wondering. I like to "think" with the character. I like to see the moment they tip over into, "fuck, I have to do this because this is who I am". I like the first kiss as someone who actually wants to be kissing someone of the same gender. The first time. All of it. My KhaiThird fics are pretty indicative of that, ha.

Part of me wants to think I like this because I like that people have the capacity to enact enormous change in their life, and the idea that change is possible is exciting. But another part of me thinks that I mostly just like the idea of love meaning you'll stretch yourself in ways you never thought possible, because without that one person, you're not willing to be who you used to be. You know, the whole love is the answer thing. I love love, is what I'm saying.
